As teachers moved the other children outside, Jamie stared towards the exit where Bradley had carried Ava away.<\/p>\n
He did not scream.<\/p>\n
His eyes simply filled with tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom,\u201d he whispered, \u201cI don\u2019t think we need Dad anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the hospital, doctors prepared Jamie for surgery.<\/p>\n

The doctors said his leg would require months of rehabilitation, but they were hopeful he would recover.<\/p>\n
Bradley appeared only after the operation.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve contacted a famous orthopaedic specialist,\u201d he announced. \u201cWhatever this costs, I\u2019ll pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you call me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMr Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Our arguments had always followed the same pattern. Bradley disappointed us, I became upset, and he accused me of being emotional. By the next evening, I would be cooking his favourite dinner, desperate to restore peace.<\/p>\n

He was wrong.<\/p>\n
My grandmother had left me two small commercial properties. I had sold them early in our marriage and invested the money under my maiden name. The investments had grown enough to support Jamie and me without Bradley.<\/p>\n

The custody battle lasted seven months.<\/p>\n

I did not celebrate.<\/p>\n
A court could establish boundaries, but it could not rebuild trust.<\/p>\n
At his first visit, Bradley arrived without an assistant, an expensive present or a rehearsed speech.<\/p>\n
Jamie was using two small crutches.<\/p>\n
\u201cHello, Jamie,\u201d Bradley said.<\/p>\n
Jamie held my hand tightly.<\/p>\n
