I went to the shelter with a single rule: I would adopt an old dog, and I would take only one. I had already chosen Milo when, as I put the leash on him, another dog behind a kennel fence began to weep as if he were being abandoned for the second time. Milo refused to walk, lay down in front of him, and no treat in the world could move him. Then the shelter worker told me: \u201cBefore you take him, there\u2019s something about these two you need to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHis name was Mr. Ernest. He lived alone with them. When he died, a niece came to take care of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

The other rested on Teddy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe niece claimed she gave them to someone who knew a guy with a ranch.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut Milo turned up by a highway.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd Teddy two and a half miles down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
I felt a flash of anger.<\/p>\n

Maggie didn\u2019t reply.<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t need to.<\/p>\n

\u201cTeddy might have been hiding. When they found him, he was dehydrated and covered in thorns.\u201d<\/p>\n
I knelt down.<\/p>\n
Teddy lifted his muzzle.<\/p>\n
He couldn\u2019t see me well, but he sniffed the air.<\/p>\n
Milo stepped closer right away.<\/p>\n
Nudged him with his nose.<\/p>\n
Teddy relaxed.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow long has he been practically blind?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe woman who called said he lost his sight gradually. Mr. Ernest had adapted the whole house for him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd Milo guided him back then too?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maggie unlocked her phone again.<\/p>\n
There was a video.<\/p>\n
She showed it to me.<\/p>\n
Milo and Teddy were walking down a sidewalk.<\/p>\n
Mr. Ernest walked behind them holding two leashes.<\/p>\n
Teddy started drifting toward a tree.<\/p>\n
Milo moved up beside him and gently nudged him back with his shoulder.<\/p>\n
Then they kept walking.<\/p>\n
Exactly the way they did in the shelter.<\/p>\n
I stared at the screen for a long time.<\/p>\n
