Three weeks passed.
\nOn the afternoon Callum was scheduled to collect Kieran, he arrived exactly when he had promised.<\/p>\n
The moment our son heard the doorbell, he ran toward the entrance.<\/p>\n
\u201cDaddy!\u201d<\/p>\n
Callum crouched and wrapped him in a hug.<\/p>\n
Kieran immediately launched into an excited story about a paper airplane he had made at school.<\/p>\n
Apparently, it had almost landed in another child\u2019s lunch.<\/p>\n
Callum listened attentively.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t glance over Kieran\u2019s shoulder to see what I was doing.<\/p>\n

He hesitated for a moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you need me to pick up anything while we\u2019re out?\u201d<\/p>\n
The woman I used to be would have taken that opening and tried to make everything comfortable again.<\/p>\n
She would have found some small errand to give him.<\/p>\n
Something that made the situation feel normal.<\/p>\n
But I wasn\u2019t that woman anymore.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, thank you. I have everything I need.\u201d<\/p>\n
Callum seemed to understand what I meant.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t ask if he could stay for dinner.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t head toward our bedroom.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t assume that spending time with Kieran entitled him to spend time with me.<\/p>\n
A moment later, our son came running back, waving his jacket excitedly.<\/p>\n
\u201cMommy! Daddy says we\u2019re getting pizza!\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat sounds wonderful. Have a great time, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n
Callum opened the front door.<\/p>\n
Then he paused and looked back.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo\u2026 what happens between us now?\u201d<\/p>\n
I held his gaze.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor now, you keep your promises to Kieran. I\u2019ll decide what comes next for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
He nodded quietly.<\/p>\n
Then he walked outside with our son.<\/p>\n
When the door closed, I stood in the hallway for a moment.<\/p>\n
The house was peaceful.<\/p>\n
But for the first time in weeks, the silence didn\u2019t feel lonely.<\/p>\n
I returned to the dining table and opened the notebook I\u2019d started that first weekend.<\/p>\n
On the opening page, the same question was still written in my handwriting.<\/p>\n
What does Callum believe will remain unchanged?<\/p>\n
I studied the words for a moment.<\/p>\n
Then I turned to a clean page.<\/p>\n
This time, I wrote a different question.<\/p>\n
What do I want?
\nAnd instead of leaving it unanswered, I began making a list.<\/p>\n
I wanted a home where Kieran would always feel loved and secure.<\/p>\n
I wanted a life where respect was something I could expect, not something I had to beg for.<\/p>\n
And I wanted enough confidence in myself to walk away from any future that required me to sacrifice my dignity just to keep someone else comfortable.<\/p>\n
I read the list once more.<\/p>\n
Then I closed the notebook.<\/p>\n
The truth was, I still loved Callum.<\/p>\n
